Project Description

MV Ventura Cruise Ship, Southampton – Atrium Marine Scaffolding

High-Tek Scaffolding designed and erected a bespoke scaffold solution within the atrium of the MV Ventura cruise ship at Southampton Docks. This was one of our most exciting and unique projects to date. The marine scaffolding work required specialist knowledge, meticulous planning and the ability to adapt to a truly unusual environment.

About the Project

High-Tek Scaffolding received a call in December 2017 inviting us to survey a ship berthed at Southampton Dock. Two days later, our team arrived at the port and were greeted by the 300-metre MV Ventura. This is one of P&O Cruises’ flagship vessels.

Over the following two months, the team designed and erected a fully engineered scaffold within the ship’s multi-deck atrium. As a result, internal refurbishment works could take place safely during the vessel’s dry dock period. Working inside a cruise ship atrium presented challenges entirely different from any land-based scaffolding project. However, High-Tek’s experience and technical capability made it possible to deliver a safe and effective solution.

Scope of Works

The project demanded a carefully engineered approach from start to finish. First, the team carried out a full site survey and structural assessment of the multi-deck atrium space. Then, they created a bespoke scaffold design that worked within the curved architecture and limited load-bearing areas of the ship.

Furthermore, the team erected a fully engineered scaffold spanning several decks of the atrium. They also installed edge protection and safety netting at every level. In addition, all access platforms, loading bays and materials handling were carefully coordinated with the ship’s crew and dockyard management.

Health and Safety

Safety was a top priority throughout this complex project. The team prepared full RAMS and secured approval from the ship’s management before any work began. All operatives held current CISRS scaffolding qualifications, which was essential for this specialist environment.

Moreover, the project required full compliance with maritime safety regulations and dock rules. The team implemented specialist fall arrest and rescue procedures for the multi-deck atrium environment. The scaffold was inspected and documented throughout in line with BS EN 12811. Consequently, zero incidents were recorded during the entire project.
