Project Description
Buttercross Monument, Winchester – Temporary Roof Structure
High-Tek Scaffolding designed and erected a specialist temporary roof structure at the iconic Buttercross Monument in Winchester, Hampshire. This high-profile project enabled full restoration works on one of England’s most treasured medieval landmarks. The temporary roof protected the ancient stonework and gave the restoration team a safe, weatherproof working environment.
About the Buttercross Monument
The Buttercross, also known as the City Cross, is a Grade I listed medieval market cross at the heart of Winchester’s High Street. It dates primarily from the late 14th and 15th centuries. The monument features intricate Gothic stone carvings, niches housing statues of historic figures, and a pinnacled canopy of exceptional craftsmanship.
Furthermore, the structure stands approximately 15 metres tall. It is one of the finest surviving medieval market crosses in England. As a scheduled ancient monument, any work requires the highest standards of care and compliance with Historic England guidance.
Scope of Works
The project required a carefully engineered approach due to the monument’s significance. First, the team designed and erected a full temporary roof structure over the Buttercross. Second, they built an internal access scaffold around the monument to give the conservation team safe working platforms at all levels.
In addition, the scaffold incorporated hoarding at ground level to protect the public and the monument. All scaffold contact points used specialist protective materials to prevent any damage to the historic stonework. The temporary roof was fully weatherproof throughout the project. As a result, the restoration team could work regardless of weather conditions.
Safety and Compliance
All works were carried out in full compliance with relevant British Standards and the requirements of Winchester City Council and Historic England. Our CISRS and CSCS-qualified operatives worked with precision and care at every stage.
Moreover, the team minimised disruption to pedestrians and traders in Winchester’s busy city centre. Hoarding and public access arrangements were coordinated throughout to maintain safe pedestrian routes along the High Street. Consequently, the project was completed safely and without incident.
